Abstract

Indian cinema, including mainstream Bollywood and regional sectors such as Tamil cinema (Kollywood), has a substantial influence on shaping and representing the socio-cultural patterns of the nation. This article examines the distinctive ways in which cinema shapes public opinion, subverts social norms, and creates awareness about issues of importance such as caste, gender, youth identity, and tradition. From the intersection of sociology and media studies, the essay discusses some classical movies such as Karuthamma, Kaaka Muttai, and Kaala. The essay shows how films are not merely for entertainment purposes but for educating people, challenging minds, and as an effective tool of societal change on a linguistic and regional scale in India.
